Is there Russian Malware on Your Router?

Last week the FBI asked everyone (literally everyone) to reboot their routers. Why? The Russians of course.

There is a nasty piece of malware floating around called “VPNFilter” that has infected somewhere in the ballpark of half a million routers.

There is no way to tell if your Router is infected or not. A list of certain devices with certain firmware versions have been published, but they aren’t sure it is limited to that, which is why they are asking literally everyone to reboot their routers.

However, that may not be enough. And they may have used one wrong word that could change the meaning of what they are asking people to do.

REBOOTING your router is what we sometimes call “power cycling”. You unplug the power, wait 30 seconds and then plug it back in.

Unfortunately, many people don’t think that would actually get rid of malware. It wouldn’t work on your laptop, so why would it on your router?

RESETTING your router is the only way to make absolutely sure it kills any malware on it. This resets the entire unit to the settings it had when you took it out of the box.

After that, you will need to update the device’s software to make sure it can’t be infected again.

If you are comfortable doing this, we recommend you do it sooner rather than later.
